India is known as a country that has witnessed amalgamation of diverse religions and cultures. To maintain communal harmony and offer the citizens an occasional breather from work, the government observes some public holidays. Some of these holidays are religious while others are secular.

Three national holidays that are observed all over the country are 2nd October (Mahatma Gandhis Birthday), 26th January (Republic Day) and 15th August (Indian Independence Day).

On National Holidays all central and state government departments are closed. Banks, post offices and several administrative sections of the government and private entities also remain closed.

However, as far as the religious public holidays are concerned, the same cannot be said. However, Christmas and Good Friday are also observed in nearly the same manner of government holidays in many states of India.

On National Holidays, amount of public transport is diminished including metro, trains and buses. This results in less of traffic jams and environmental pollution on those days. On major public holidays, citizens like to engage in fun and leisurely activities.

Depending on time of the year and occasions, some such holidays are also used by people for informal get together. For instance, on Christmas and New Years Eve, both of which are observed in large parts of the nation as off days, a lot of people get involved in picnics.

Children and teens take part in games and people also pay visit to their near and are ones on these days. However, private organizations and especially IT industry do not shut operations on several public holidays owing to their need to maintain productivity level.

Of late, the demands to reduce number of holidays in government departments have been placed by a number of public bodies. A lot of holidays in any organization can affect economic growth.
