Food is an integral part of Chinese New Year celebrations. Traditionally the members of the family unite in the house of the eldest in the clan for an elaborate meal.

Speaking of elaborate meals, the traditional New Year feast in the imperial house consisted of 99 dishes since the numeric 9 is considered auspicious by the Chinese.

Another food item incorporated in the menu for good fortune is fish. In some areas, people gift oranges as a symbol for good luck and respect.

Chinese New Year Recipes :

Today many Chinese people meet their family in restaurants for New Year meals. But if you want to cook it up at home here are a couple of recipes

Whole Fish In Black Bean Sauce

  • Take a whole fish of your choice (halibut or red snapped or basa tastes good) and make some slits along the body. Rub it with salt and lightly fry both sides on low heat till the fish flakes easily. Soak black beans.
  • In a bowl, mix together ginger paste, soaked black beans, soya sauce, sesame oil, vegetable oil and sugar. Now in a pan heat the contents of the bowl till the beans melt. Stir continuously. Remove from heat.
  • In a serving dish, pour half of the piping hot sauce, put the fish and pour over the remaining sauce. Sit it for a while for the fish to absorb the flavors of the sauce. Garnish with sliced spring onions and serve with steamed rice.

Orange Donuts

  • In a bowl, combine zest of an orange, coarsely ground sugar and powdered cinnamon. Take buttermilk donut dough and roll into balls.
  • Now in a pan deep fry these balls, pat off the excess oil and coat them well with the ground mixture. Serve immediately for best results.
